Aged & Seniors

About Service

A range of services are provided by us to support frail older people and people with disabilities, and their carers, to live independently in the community.

Services are provided when frailty, disability or illness prevent a person from undertaking the tasks of daily living for themselves. The range of services available includes home care, personal care, respite care, delivered meals, property maintenance, social support, community transport and senior citizens centres.

Approximately 4,000 residents access community care services each year. Funding is provided by the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments through the Home and Community Care (HACC)(PDF, 67KB) program to assist Council in providing these services.

How to adopt a Senior?

The Adopt A Senior Organization was founded in 2014. It is an extension of the very successful Adopt-A-Senior Holiday Program that started over 20 years ago at a facility in Manhattan.

Under the leadership of Annye I. Cohen and Bill Cowen, the mission for this non-profit is to provide gifts to as many Seniors living in long-term care facilities as possible. We have grown to now work with The Orchards in Jackson NJ, Sunrise of Jackson, Sunrise Brighton Gardens of Middletown, The Grand in Whitestone, Queens, CareOne of Jackson, Bartley Healthcare, CareOne of East Brunswick and Applewood Estates, Sunrise of Marlboro, Acclaim Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Lawrence Rehab & Healthcare, and The Manor Health & Rehab Center .

The concept for the organization is in honor of Annye's Grandfather, Izzy Cohen, who taught Annye that it is important for people to always "give back" and help others. When Annye began to volunteer at Kateri Residence over a decade ago, she quickly learned that many Seniors in the home had no family and more importantly, no visitors.  Hence many of the Seniors in the facility did not have anyone to celebrate their birthday nor anyone to share the holidays with. Annye worked with the staff at the residence and the Adopt-A-Senior program was born.

Bill was also inspired to "give back" at a young age. He has co-chaired and volunteered at many fundraisers for numerous non-profit organizations. After meeting Annye many years ago, the two realized they had the same goal of helping Seniors and Bill became very involved in the Adopt-A-Senior Holiday Program. His involvement has helped to make this program very successful.

Together, Annye and Bill are now making their dream a reality!
